Two faces pressed together until they share features — one eye doing duty for both, noses folded into each other, the whole thing drawn with the freedom of a man with nothing left to prove.

Picasso came back to the kiss again and again in his last decade, well into his eighties, painting faster and more crudely than at any point since he was a boy, and the late work was dismissed at the time as the output of an old man losing his grip. It is now generally understood to be the opposite: a painter who had stopped negotiating with anybody about what a face was allowed to look like.

Daddy is a defender of late Picasso and will take the argument on with anyone who has had a similar number of drinks.

The shirt itself is the good kind of basic: combed ring-spun cotton, preshrunk, side-seamed so it hangs straight, taped shoulders so the collar doesn’t twist after the fortieth wash. It fits like the tee you’ve had for ten years, on day one.

Curator’s note

Two faces at close range is a bold print. Give it a plain ground and stand still.
