DADDY JO

Sheepskin Rugs, Cowhide Rugs, Shearling Pillows and Wool Throws: How Daddy Dresses a Room

Why rugs, throw pillows and throw blankets finish a room, how to style them, and the Homelosophy pieces Daddy Jo can't stop collecting.

Every room has two layers. The first is the one you plan: the sofa, the table, the lamp you saved for. The second is the one you touch: the area rug underfoot, the throw pillows on the sofa, the wool throw blanket over the chair. Hard surfaces make a room look expensive. Soft furnishings make it somewhere you want to stay.

A room with good furniture and no textiles is a showroom. Nice sofa, bare floor, one sad pillow. Lovely. Where's my coat.

Why Rugs, Throw Pillows and Throws Matter

Rugs make a room quieter. Hard floors bounce sound around. A sheepskin rug or a cowhide rug softens footsteps, conversation and the neighbor's TV.

A rug tells the furniture where it belongs. An area rug under the sofa and chairs turns separate pieces into a living room.

Throw pillows are where the color and texture go. A sofa is a long commitment. A shearling pillow or a lumbar pillow is a season.

A throw blanket is the cheapest room makeover there is. Change the throw, swap two pillows, drape a hide over the chair. Same apartment, different mood. No movers.

They're warm. A sheepskin runner beside the bed beats a cold floor at 7 a.m.

How to Style Rugs, Throw Pillows and Throws: Daddy's Rules

What size rug for a living room? Big enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. A small rug floating in the middle of the room makes everything look smaller, including you.

How to arrange throw pillows. Mix the shapes: squares in back, a lumbar pillow in front. All squares looks like a hotel lobby. All lumbars looks like a mistake.

How to style a throw blanket. Fold it over the arm of the sofa or the back of a chair. If it looks arranged, start over.

Animal print. One per house. A leopard print pillow counts.

Mix new with old. Modern texture next to vintage and antique pieces keeps both from looking like a museum.

High-low. Put the expensive thing next to the plain thing. A good sheepskin hide over an ordinary chair does more than a new chair would.

Homelosophy: Custom Rugs, Sheepskin and Wool Throws, Handcrafted in Patagonia Since 2008

Homelosophy is Daddy's newest obsession. A sheepskin over the reading chair, a shearling lumbar pillow on the sofa, a merino throw at the foot of the guest suite bed. The pieces are modern, but they're warm and comfortable, and they sit easily next to Daddy's vintage and antique staples. A sculpted shearling pillow on an old leather club chair. A laser-etched cowhide under a century-old table. Natural materials tend to get along with things that have already lived a life.

Homelosophy has been making natural home decor since 2008, in its own facilities in Patagonia, Argentina. The line covers custom-cut designer rugs in shearling and hair-on-hide, organic wool throws, throw pillows, oversized wool poufs and natural leather furniture. Everything is made to order with skilled artisans from ethically sourced sheepskin, cowhide and wool. The textiles are 100% natural fibers, free of chemical dyes and bleaches. Rugs, Throws and Pillows: FAQ

Are sheepskin rugs good for floors?
Yes, in low to moderate traffic: bedsides, hallways and reading nooks. Keep them away from mud, spills and heavy wear.

How do you clean a sheepskin rug?
Shake it, air it out and brush it gently to keep the loft. Spot clean with a damp cloth, and use a fur-specialist dry cleaner when it needs more.

How do you clean a cowhide rug?
Vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment and spot clean with mild soap. Avoid moisture, steam and abrasive cleaners, and rotate the rug now and then so it wears evenly.

Can I get a custom size rug?
Yes. Several Homelosophy rugs, including Klint and Loop Lasered, are made to order in sizes from 5 × 8 to 12 × 15, with a 5–8 week lead time.

Where are Homelosophy rugs made?
In Homelosophy's own facilities in Patagonia, Argentina, where the brand has worked with artisans since 2008.

What's the difference between a throw and a blanket?
Size. On the Lambskin Trim, the throw is 51" × 71" and the blanket is 51" × 90". A throw covers your lap; a blanket covers the bed.

Do shearling pillows come with inserts?
On Homelosophy shearling pillows the insert is sold separately. It has a cotton shell filled with 90% duck feather and 10% down.

Where to Start

You don't need the custom rug this week. Start with a sheepskin hide over the chair you actually sit in, one good wool throw, and two throw pillows that don't match each other but do match the room. Live with it. Then do the floor.

Furnish it like someone's watching. Then sit down in it like nobody is.
