The Morning After
Fifteen minutes, face down. The ritual for the night you'll deny.
It's 7:40. The alarm didn't go off so much as accuse. Last night had a velvet banquette, a second bottle nobody ordered, and a conversation Daddy will describe, if asked, as "networking." By 10:00 there is a meeting, a lunch, and a man who expects to see someone rested. Daddy is not rested. Daddy is going to look rested, which is a different skill and a far more useful one.
He does not reach for his phone. He reaches for a glass of water, and then for the fridge.
1. Water, then quiet
A full glass before anything touches the face. Skin reads dehydration before you feel it: the under-eye goes papery, fine lines deepen, and the whole face looks slightly borrowed. Nothing in a bottle outworks a morning of not drinking water, so drink the water.
2. Cleanse, gently
The night is still on your face: smoke, someone else's cologne, the bar's lighting somehow. Wash it off softly. LACTEA$29.00goes on as an oil and turns to milk with water, and it takes the evening off without stripping skin that is already having a hard time. Pat dry. Don't rub. You've been through enough.
3. RESPITE, fifteen minutes, face up
This is the step. RESPITE$35.00 is a cooling hydrogel patch, and Daddy keeps it in the fridge for exactly this morning. Put one under each eye and lie back. Konjac, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid bring the water. Cherimoya and rooibos bring the antioxidants. The hydrogel holds all of it against the thinnest skin on the body long enough to matter.
Phone face-down. Eyes closed. Coffee brewing in the next room. Daddy does not answer the door during these fifteen minutes. It's the only step in the whole routine that asks you to do nothing at all, and most men are worst at that one.
When they come off, massage what's left into the skin. No rinsing.
4. Wake the eyes
If the puffiness is winning, VIGIL$29.00, the caffeine gel booster, goes on next. Then a proper eye treatment, pressed in with the ring finger: GUARD$39.00 if you want the 3-in-1, or JUVENTAS$39.00 if the lines are the bigger complaint.
If you're going to spend on one thing from this post, spend it here. The Dior Homme Dermo System eye serum$119.50 runs on caffeine and sugar, the same wake-up call you're already drinking, pointed at the puffiness and the dark circles. It's a cool gel that melts in fast. One pump, pressed from the inner corner out to the temples. It was made for men, and it was made for exactly this morning.
5. Flood, then seal
SURGE$35.00 is double hydration in a gel. It sinks in fast and gives dehydrated skin something to hold onto. Seal it with HELIOSSold out, the day cream.
6. For the mornings when the 10:00 is the board
Some mornings the eyes aren't the whole problem. Daddy keeps Natura Bissé Diamond Extreme Ice-Lift$213.50 for those. It's a peel-off cryo mask that goes on cold, over your cream, and it's meant to lift, tighten, and bring the glow back to a face that looks like it went out. Lavender oil helps with the rest of you. Twenty minutes, then peel it off from the chin up. Natura Bissé made it for special occasions. Daddy considers surviving the morning a special occasion.
7. SPF, every morning, especially this one
You're about to go outside and pretend nothing happened, so wear sunscreen while you do it. Supergoop Unseen SPF 50$42.46 is invisible and scentless, so it won't argue with your cologne. It has bisabolol and licorice root in it for the redness last night left behind. It also works as a primer, if that's the kind of morning it is. Daddy won't ask.
8. The beard
Two drops of PELT$29.00, worked through. A soft beard reads as a man who had a quiet evening in. Let them think it.
9. Get dressed like you meant to
The navy French terry sweatshirt, with two or three vintage brooches clustered at the chest. Tailored jeans. Loafers. It's soft enough for the morning you're actually having, and sharp enough for the one you're claiming. The brooches do the talking so you don't have to.
10. The last word
Last night you went home wearing someone else's cologne. This morning you leave in your own. Daddy doesn't wear anything loud the morning after. Loud is what got him here. He reaches for Creed Original Vetiver$447.07, which is dry, sharp, and understated. It opens with vetiver root, lemon, and blackcurrant, and settles into sandalwood, tonka, and frankincense. It doesn't announce itself, and that's the point. You want the room to notice that you look well, not that you're trying to. Two sprays, and it lasts from the 10:00 through lunch and whatever comes after.
It's the fragrance equivalent of a clean white shirt. Nobody asks where you were last night. They just assume it was somewhere good.
And for Tuesday
Daddy keeps a second box in that fridge. AURUM$35.00 isn't for a night. It's for the years. Niacinamide works on dullness and uneven tone, and hyaluronic acid softens the fine lines that dryness digs. There's gold in it too, mostly for the glow. RESPITE is for Sunday. AURUM is for Tuesday, when the mirror is being honest with you. Same fifteen minutes, same phone face-down, different confession.
And tonight
The real recovery starts before bed. Tonight, a small amount of La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream$618.75: sparingly, at night, only when the skin has earned it. This morning, it has. It's the one jar Daddy will never give up, and after a week like this one, you'll understand why. The rest of what he keeps for nights like this lives in Daddy Loves Lux.
Seven pairs to a box. Buy both. Daddy has never once regretted having a plan.
Who's your Daddy? Daddy Jo.
