Daddy Loves Lux: The Ten Daddy Won't Take Off the Shelf

Lux means what it means to you. For some of you it's the jar. For some of you it's the lab the jar came out of. For Daddy, the definition has moved more than once in the last five years — what he thought was lux at 25 he now calls loud, and some of what he ignored then he now considers the quietest kind of expensive. Lux in general is its own post, and it's coming.

This one is narrower. Daddy's favorite category in the whole shop is Daddy Loves Lux — Skincare, and there are a few things in it that have survived every edit of the shelf. Bottles come and go. These don't.

Comforting. That's the first word and it's the right one. This cream will magically — and it must be magic — change your skin almost overnight from whatever problem you've decided to have. Dry skin, gone. Too much sun, managed. Just need some extra comfort, handled.

The texture is the whole argument: it glides instead of dragging and finishes velvety, not coated. Caviar micro-nutrients and Caviar Premier work on the skin's own metabolism and structure, and a cellular complex carries them further. What you see the next morning reads lifted and firmed, not just moisturized. La Prairie has been putting caviar in a jar since 1987. This is the one that made the argument stick.

How Daddy uses it: sparingly, only at night, and only when his skin tells him it needs the extra help. That's Daddy's preference. Listen to your own skin — it will tell you.

Amazing products, from every day to once in a while. And the lift actually lifts.

Daddy has been using Diamond Extreme since he was 20, so you know — ugh — like ten years. Cough.

The serum is the center of the Diamond collection: fast-absorbing, silky, and built on the fact that skin behaves differently by day than by night. The Smart Energy Complex — Artemia salina from plankton, peony root extract — complements the skin's own cycles, rebalancing during the day and replenishing at night, instead of barking the same order round the clock. Fine lines look diminished; the complexion reads younger and more even. Morning and night, both. It's one of the few serums where twice a day is the design, not the upsell.

The eye is Diamond for the contour. It lifts and re-sculpts, reduces fine lines, brings down dark circles and puffiness, and — this matters more than it sounds — reduces sensitivity, because the skin around an eye is where most products announce themselves. Fluid, non-greasy, second-skin, matte. It balances, strengthens and revitalizes, which is another way of saying it is what you use when you can't name the problem.

Daddy's vitamin C, and the most potent thing in the C+C line: 12% vitamin C inside a 20% antioxidant cocktail, in a waterless formula. Waterless is the point. Vitamin C degrades in water; take the water out and you get real stability and fast, deep absorption. It goes on closer to an oil than a fluid, and a very little covers the whole face, so the bottle outlasts its size.

Brightening, revitalizing, age-defying — the things the vitamin is actually known for. Works on wrinkles, dryness and uneven tone; skin reads more hydrated, supple and firm.

Mornings, under sunscreen. Vitamin C and SPF are a pair. Each one makes the other worth more.

5. La Prairie — Skin Caviar Nighttime Oil

Caviar Retinol — caviar-derived retinol blended with caviar lipids — in an oil for the night. This is caviar science pointed at lines rather than at lifting, which is a departure for the line, and it's the reason the jar is the way it is: cobalt blue outside, opaque black inside, because retinol degrades in light. The texture is generous and silky, soothing and cushioning as it goes on. Fine lines and wrinkles are the target.

Night only. Sunscreen the next morning without exception. Retinol and sun is the one combination that will actively cost you.

6. Sisley — Sisleÿum Anti-Aging Comfort Cream

Sisleÿum is Sisley's men's line, and this is its richer cream, for normal-to-dry male skin. Rich but light-fluid. Kinkeliba, a plant-derived Phyto'active, soothes the stress a face takes from a day and protects against daily aggressors; Isodonis japonicus extract supports firmness and tone; adenosine smooths fine lines.

The part men actually notice: it does not shine. Most anti-aging moisturizers were formulated for somebody who intends to put makeup over them. This one wasn't.

After shaving, once the sting has gone. Straight onto a freshly shaved face is how you find out which of your products contains alcohol.

7. Sisley — Black Rose Precious Face Oil

Silky rather than heavy, and rich in omega 3 and 6 — that's the point. The omegas replenish essential elements skin loses and cannot make for itself. Black rose extract gives it the satin feel the line is known for. It's aging-focused rather than purely nourishing, and the texture is the reason men who normally avoid oils get along with this one.

Two or three drops, warmed between the palms, pressed on last. An oil applied first blocks everything you put on after it.

8. Dior Homme — Dermo System

The Dior Homme stuff is kind of great, and nobody talks about it.

The emulsion is the step the rest of the six-product range supports — lighter than a cream, faster to absorb, boosts cell regeneration to keep skin looking young, and it doesn't sit under a beard or turn to shine on a forehead by mid-morning. If you take one product from the line, take this one.

The eye serum is aimed at looking tired rather than looking old. A gel that lifts the contour, tightens the lid, and — through the Cafexyl complex — works on both the dark pigment and the puffiness under it. It has absorbed before you finish the second eye. Keep it at the office. It's the only eye product here that works fast enough to matter on a Tuesday afternoon.

The cleansing gel clarifies properly without the tightness that sends men back to bar soap — it goes into the pore rather than skating over it. Warm water, not hot. Hot water strips a face, and then your moisturizer spends the morning repairing what your cleanser did.

Sisleÿa is the top of Sisley's range, and this is its wrinkle serum — with a lifting sensation you feel as it goes on. Cacao Porcelana extract is the new active, brought in to boost the skin's anti-wrinkle potential, alongside plant-based ingredients working at different levels. Fresh texture, glides. It replumps wrinkles from within rather than filling them from above, and it relaxes the features — a real effect, mostly about the muscles you hold tense without noticing.

Flat palms, press. This is not a serum to rub in. The lifting sensation is the instruction.

10. La Prairie — Cellular Swiss UV Protection Veil SPF 50 PA++++

Sunscreen from a Swiss lab at Swiss lab prices, and the single most effective anti-aging product La Prairie sells. UV filters plus antioxidants against UVA, UVB and environmental damage; PA++++ is the top of the UVA scale. Lightweight, fast-absorbing, deeply hydrating instead of the tight, drying finish that makes men quit sun protection by week two. Veil is the right word — no white cast, no weight, which is the only reason a sunscreen ever gets worn daily.

Every morning. Indoors or out. Winter included. The damage this prevents is the damage everything else on this list is trying to undo.

Every product above earns its place by what's in it and what that does. The short version:
