Calvin and Hobbes Faces Contour T-Shirt
Two faces in a single continuous contour — a boy and a tiger, drawn as one line, which is a neat solution to a strip that was always about one character in two bodies.
It ran for ten years, ended in 1995 while it was still the best thing on the page, and its author has spent the three decades since declining to license it for almost anything, which is why the strip has no film, no fast-food cup, and an unusually intact reputation. What it was actually about was a small boy with an enormous vocabulary and an imaginary friend who may not have been imaginary, and the last panel is a sledge going downhill into fresh snow.
Daddy is unsentimental about most things and completely useless about this one.
The shirt itself is the good kind of basic: combed ring-spun cotton, preshrunk, side-seamed so it hangs straight, taped shoulders so the collar doesn’t twist after the fortieth wash. It fits like the tee you’ve had for ten years, on day one.
How to wear it
White or heather grey, jeans, sneakers. It is a Sunday shirt and it should look like one.
A single-line graphic wants nothing else going on. Plain tee, plain everything.
