In 1952 Picasso was handed a deconsecrated chapel in Vallauris, a pottery town in the south of France, and told to do what he liked with it. He painted the vault: war on one wall, peace on the other. This face — also called Head of a Woman— belongs to the peace side. The model was Françoise Gilot, the painter he lived with for ten years and the only woman who ever left him first.

It's a Picasso face, which means it's several faces at once and still, somehow, one person looking back at you. More going on than the dove. More of a conversation.
