Daddy Jo Knows Flesh, Inside and Out

On listening to the largest organ you own, finding out what it actually is, and what to put on it once you know.

Most men have never looked at their skin. They have looked in the mirror, certainly. They have checked the jaw, the hairline, whether the collar sits right. But they have never looked at the skin as a thing with its own opinions. Daddy has. Daddy has been in a long, occasionally difficult, ultimately devoted relationship with his face for decades, and the first thing he learned is this: the skin talks. Constantly. Most people just don't speak the language.

So. A lesson. Sit down.

The organ you are wearing

Skin is not a surface. It is an organ, the largest you have, roughly two square meters of it, and it is built in three layers.

The epidermis is the part you see. Its outermost sheet is the stratum corneum, a shingled wall of dead cells called corneocytes held together by a mortar of lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids. This is the lipid barrier, and it is the whole ballgame. When it is intact, water stays in and irritants stay out. When it is compromised, water evaporates straight through you, a process dermatologists call transepidermal water loss, and everything from wind to your own cologne starts to sting. Over the top of the barrier sits the acid mantle, a thin film of sebum and sweat that keeps the skin slightly acidic, somewhere around pH 5, which is exactly where your microbiome likes it and exactly where most bar soap does not.

Underneath is the dermis. This is the living part. Fibroblasts here manufacture collagen and elastin, the scaffolding that keeps the face from sliding south. Sebaceous glands live here too, each attached to a hair follicle, quietly producing sebum, the oil your skin makes to waterproof itself. Blood vessels, nerve endings, sweat glands. The dermis is where hydration is stored, where inflammation happens, and where aging is actually decided. Nothing you rub on the epidermis does anything unless it changes what is happening in the dermis.

Below that, the hypodermis, mostly fat, which cushions everything and is why babies have cheeks and Daddy has cheekbones. Leave it alone.

Three layers. Learn the words. When a product says it "penetrates deep," you now know to ask: deep into what.

Listen to it

Your skin is sending signals every hour of the day. Here is the translation.

Tightness after cleansing. Your barrier has been stripped. The cleanser was too strong, the water too hot, or both. Tightness is not "clean." Tightness is damage.

Shine by noon. Sebum overproduction, sometimes called seborrhea. Usually genetic, often made worse by over-cleansing, because the skin panics and makes more.

Flaking, roughness, an ashy cast. Either a lack of sebum, which is dryness, or a lack of water, which is dehydration, and these are not the same thing. Daddy will get to that. Persistent, cracking dryness has a name: xerosis.

Redness that comes and goes. Erythema. Blood vessels dilating near the surface. Heat, alcohol, fragrance, friction, or a barrier that has been worn thin.

Small bumps in the beard line or on the neck after shaving. This is folliculitis, inflammation of the hair follicle, and specifically pseudofolliculitis barbae when the hair curls back into the skin. It is not acne. It is a shaving problem and a follicle problem, and it is treated differently.

Blackheads and whiteheads. Comedones, open and closed. A follicle plugged with sebum and dead cells. The open ones oxidize and go dark. Not dirt. Never dirt. Stop scrubbing at them.

Fine lines that show up when you're tired and vanish when you're not. Dehydration lines. Water, not age. The good news is they are the easiest thing on this list to fix.

Fine lines that are there regardless. Collagen loss in the dermis. That one is a longer conversation, and Daddy is writing it.

The pinch

Daddy would like to teach you a test. Doctors call it the skin turgor test. Daddy calls it the pinch, and it takes four seconds.

Take the skin on the back of your hand between your thumb and forefinger. Pinch it up into a little tent. Hold for three seconds. Let go.

If it snaps back flat instantly, your dermis is holding water. Well done.

If it hesitates, if the tent lingers for a second or two before settling, you are dehydrated. Not dry. Dehydrated. Your skin does not have enough water in it, regardless of how much oil it is producing.

If the tent lingers, you are dehydrated. Not dry. Dehydrated.
Daddy, on the pinch

Two notes. If you are north of forty, the back of the hand loses elasticity on its own and the test gets less honest there, so pinch the skin over the collarbone or the cheek instead. And this is a field test, not a diagnosis. But Daddy has never once seen it lie about a man who has had three martinis and no water.

Now the second test, for type. Wash your face with something gentle. Pat dry. Put nothing on it. Wait thirty minutes. Then look.

  • Shine everywhere: oily.
  • Tight, dull, maybe a little flaky, no shine at all: dry.
  • Shine down the center, the forehead, nose and chin, and normal or tight at the cheeks: combination.
  • Pink, warm, reactive, you can feel the air on it: sensitive.
  • Comfortable, even, nothing to report: normal, and Daddy would like you to leave, you are making the others feel bad.

Dehydration is not on that list because it is not a type. It is a condition, and it can sit on top of any of the five. The oily man who is also dehydrated is the most common man in the world and the most confused. He drinks nothing, sleeps four hours, uses a foaming cleanser twice a day, and cannot understand why his face is simultaneously shiny and flaking. It is because his sebaceous glands are working overtime while his stratum corneum is a desert. The answer for him is not less oil. It is more water.

Daddy's must-haves, by type

Five categories, always, in this order: cleanse, tone, treat, moisturize, eyes. This is the ritual. The ritual does not change. What changes is what goes in each slot.

A word on toners before Daddy begins, because men were raised wrong here. A toner is not the alcohol your father splashed on to feel a burn. That was an astringent, and it was destroying his acid mantle. A modern toner is the first layer of hydration, applied to damp skin, that makes everything after it work better. If it stings, it is not a toner, it is a mistake.

Dry

Your sebaceous glands are lazy and your lipid barrier is thin. Everything you use should add oil, hold water, and never, ever foam.

  • LACTEA — Sensitive Skin Oil-To-Milk Cleanser
Cleanser: LACTEA. An oil-to-milk cleanser. Goes on as an oil, dissolves the day, turns to milk with water, rinses without stripping a single ceramide. If you take one thing from this post, take this.
    $29.00
  • IMBER — Hydrating Toner
Toner: IMBER, the hydrating toner. Rose water, hyaluronic acid, no added fragrance. Pressed onto a damp face, then move fast, because the next step wants to go on wet.
    $29.00
  • SURGE — Double Hydration Boost Gel + HA
Treatment: SURGE, pressed into that damp skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant; it pulls water into the epidermis and holds it. On the nights the face feels like parchment, ELIXIR, the facial oil, over the top of everything as a final seal.
    $35.00
  • DENSUS — Nourishing Rich Cream, Fragrance Free
Moisturizer: DENSUS. A rich cream, fragrance free, built for skin that needs fat. Occlusive enough to stop transepidermal water loss overnight without feeling like a candle.
    $39.00
  • IRIS — Brightening Eye Cream
Eyes: IRIS. Horse chestnut, ginkgo, betaine. Brightening and hydrating, for the thinnest skin on the body, where dryness shows first.
    $32.00
  • The Cream - 5% Urea + 2% Panthenol Body Cream
The rest of you: THE CREAM from Corpus. Five percent urea, two percent panthenol. Urea is a keratolytic and a humectant at once, meaning it softens the rough and pulls in water. Elbows, shins, hands. Daddy's winter.
    $45.00

Oily

Your glands are enthusiastic. The goal is not to shut them down; you cannot, and if you try they will retaliate. The goal is to keep the follicles clear, the water up, and the shine managed.

  • PURGO — Purifying Mousse
Cleanser: PURGO, the purifying mousse, at night. FLUX, the clarifying gel, in the morning, from the LUCIDUS box. Neither should leave you tight. If they do, you are using too much or leaving it on too long.
    $35.00
  • SICCUS — Purifying Toner
Toner: SICCUS, the purifying toner, sparingly, on the T-zone only. Salicylic acid, the oil-soluble one, goes into the pore and lifts what is clogging it. It is the one toner Daddy lets carry a little alcohol, and only on the nose and forehead. Not the cheeks. The cheeks did nothing wrong.
    $25.00
  • PHOENIX — Exosome & Niacinamide Serum
Treatment: PHOENIX. Exosome and niacinamide serum. Niacinamide regulates sebum, tightens the appearance of pores, and calms the low-grade inflammation that oily skin lives with. This is the single most useful serum in the line for this type.
    $39.00
  • SHIELD - Oil-Free Hydrating Gel
Moisturizer: SHIELD. Oil-free hydrating gel. Yes, you moisturize. Skipping it is how you became oily-dehydrated in the first place. Gel, not cream. Water, not fat.
    $29.00
  • VIGIL — Caffeine Gel Booster
Eyes: VIGIL. Caffeine gel booster. Cool, light, depuffing, absorbs in seconds, nothing greasy migrating into your lash line by lunch.
    $29.00
  • 2-in-1 - Hair & Body Wash for men
The rest of you: THE WASH 2-in-1 for hair and body, and on the days the back and shoulders are acting up, THE SCRUB, which is Icelandic volcano and is permitted below the neck and nowhere else.
    $32.00

Combination

You are two men. Treat them separately. Daddy knows this is annoying.

  • NIMBUS — Cleansing Foam
Cleanser: NIMBUS, the cleansing foam, gentle enough for the cheeks and honest enough for the nose. If the cheeks ever feel tight, swap to TALLOW, the cleansing milk, at night.
    $25.00
  • IMBER — Hydrating Toner
Toner: IMBER everywhere. Nothing clarifying unless the T-zone is genuinely misbehaving, and then only there.
    $29.00
  • SURGE — Double Hydration Boost Gel + HA
Treatment: SURGE on the outer thirds, PHOENIX on the center of the face. Two serums, two zones. It takes eleven extra seconds.
    $35.00
  • SOMNUS — Ceramide Night Cream
Moisturizer: HELIOS in the day. It carries multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, meaning different sizes of the molecule that hydrate at different depths of the epidermis, and it sits well under sunscreen. SOMNUS at night, and if the cheeks are dry, a little more of it there.
    $45.00
  • JUVENTAS - Peptide Age-Defying Eye Cream
Eyes: JUVENTAS. Peptide eye cream. Peptides are signal molecules; they tell fibroblasts to keep making collagen. Start before you think you need it.
    $39.00
  • The Wash - Peppermint & Dark Cedar
The rest of you: THE WASH, in whichever scent suits your evening, and THE SERUM for the body, which is a lightweight oil-and-hyaluronic layer that absorbs before you finish the sentence.
    $35.00

Sensitive

Your barrier is thin, your nerve endings are close to the surface, and your blood vessels flush at a glance. Fewer ingredients. No fragrance. No foam. Nothing that tingles. Tingling is not "working." Tingling is erythema announcing itself.

  • LACTEA — Sensitive Skin Oil-To-Milk Cleanser
Cleanser: LACTEA, again, because it was built for you. Or THE WASH — SENSITIVE from Corpus, which does face and body in one bottle, with linden, jasmine and plum.
    $29.00
  • IMBER — Hydrating Toner
Toner: IMBER, cold from the fridge, and nothing else.
    $29.00
  • PREBIOTIC ONE — Bioactive Prebiotics Jelly Serum
Treatment: PREBIOTIC ONE. It feeds the microbiome on your skin rather than fighting it. A calm microbiome is a calm barrier is a calm face. Introduce one product at a time and wait a week before adding the next, so if something flares you know who did it.
    $35.00
  • DENSUS — Nourishing Rich Cream, Fragrance Free
Moisturizer: DENSUS. Fragrance free, rich, ceramide-minded. In the day, if it is too heavy, HELIOS, which is well behaved.
    $39.00
  • IRIS — Brightening Eye Cream
Eyes: IRIS. Horse chestnut is a vascular tonic; it is there for the redness and the shadows.
    $32.00
  • THE CREAM — SENSITIVE Body Cream
The rest of you: THE CREAM — SENSITIVE. Same body, fewer opinions.
    $32.00

Normal

Daddy told you to leave. Fine. You are here to maintain what you have and delay what is coming.

  • NIMBUS — Cleansing Foam
    Cleanser: NIMBUS.
    $25.00
  • IMBER — Hydrating Toner
    Toner: IMBER.
    $29.00
  • PEPTIDE ONE — Peptide Anti-Aging Serum
Treatment: PEPTIDE ONE at night. In the morning, VITAMIN C ONE, coming soon, an antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals daylight throws at you.
    $55.00
  • The RITUAL — Hydration Ritual Collection Box
Moisturizer: THE RITUAL, if you want the whole thing in one box; it exists for exactly you. Otherwise HELIOS by day, SOMNUS by night.
    $69.00
  • GUARD — 3-in-1 Anti-Aging Eye Cream
Eyes: GUARD. Three jobs in one tube. Lines, puffiness, dark circles.
    $39.00
  • The OIL - Omega 6-9 Glowing Skin Body Oil
The rest of you: THE OIL. Omega six through nine, on damp skin out of the shower, and you will glow in a way that gets commented on.
    $52.00

The beard line

A quick word, because the folliculitis men are waiting. If you shave and you bump, the follicle is inflamed and the hair is curling back into it. Shave with the grain, never against. Use a cleanser that will not clog, FLUX or NIMBUS. Follow with PHOENIX; niacinamide is anti-inflammatory and this is what it is for. If you keep the beard, PELT$29.00, the beard oil, softens the hair so it grows out instead of in, and conditions the skin underneath that nobody ever thinks about.

Acne and aging

These get their own posts, because they deserve them and because Daddy has a lot to say. For now, two sentences each.

If you are breaking out: FLUX, PHOENIX, SHIELD, and on the lighter days, ACIES$35.00, a chemical exfoliant. Do not touch your face, do not scrub your face, and do not buy anything that says "deep pore" in a font that is shouting.

If you are aging, and you are: PEPTIDE ONE, BAKUCHI$55.00, which is bakuchiol, the plant-derived retinol alternative that does not make you peel, JUVENTAS for the eyes, and REGNUM, the collagen night cream, coming soon. The CATENA$125.00 box puts the peptide trio together for the men who have decided.

More on both. Soon. Daddy is typing.

And then, the body

Everything above the collar has been covered. Everything below it has been ignored, by you, for years. The skin on your back has the same dermis, the same follicles, the same barrier, and it has been washed with a bar of something that smells like a car air freshener since you were fourteen.

Corpus is the body line. The Wash, The Serum$42.00, The Cream, The Oil, The Scrub$35.00, The Scalp Scrub$34.00. Same philosophy, larger canvas. Daddy will walk you through the whole thing in a post of its own, because the body, considered, is a longer conversation than one paragraph.

The verdict

Learn the three layers. Listen to the signals. Pinch the hand. Wait thirty minutes with nothing on. Find out which of the five men you are. Then build the ritual: cleanse, tone, treat, moisturize, eyes. Every morning. Every night. No exceptions, no excuses, no bar soap.

Your skin has been talking to you your whole life. Daddy has simply taught you to listen.

Not sure which of the five you are? Tell Daddy about your face. Four questions, and he answers with the ritual: the box, the pieces beside it, and the order they go on.

Who's your Daddy? Daddy Jo.
